On our third day, the plan was to visit Vinicunca, also known as the Rainbow Mountain, which is located 139 km from Cusco. Nevertheless, we were struggling about going to Vinicunca a few days earlier as we were told that in the season between December and March the weather in the area would be mostly cloudy and snowy. However, on the night before we decided to go for it hoping for the best possible conditions. On the next day, we had to wake up at 4am in order to get the van on time. At 9am we had a satisfying breakfast that was the basis of our trek that we later made. Later, the bus drove us to the starting point of the trail. During the ride we received some coca leaves that should be helpful for the altitude and which are very common in Peru and Bolivia. The way up was quite intense and we could feel the difference in altitude. An hour later we finally reached the top and guess what, all our doubts about the weather were gone as the sun was shining and we could literally admire a rainbow on the mountain. It should be mentioned that mass tourism appeared in Vinicunca only in the mid-2010s, because at that time different colored mountain belts appeared on the slopes and summits. Previously, the mountain was covered with glacial caps, but they melted due to climate change. The mountain contains seven colors that result from the mineralogical composition of these mountains. These are respectively: the pink color is due to red clay, the white color is due to quartzose, sandstone and marls, the red color is due to iron and clays, the green is due to phyllites and clays rich in ferro magnesian, the brown is due to a fanglomerate composed of rock with magnesium and the mustard yellow color comes from the calcareous sandstones rich in sulphurous minerals. We were told that before Covid, the mountain had around 3000 visitors a day. Nowadays the numbers have dropped by around 60%. During our stay on the summit, we met many other tourists from all over the world In addition to Vinicunca, we could also see Nevado Auzangate, the highest mountain around Cusco with a height of 6384 m. After a 2-hour stay, the weather suddenly changed drastically. Clouds had formed and it even started to hail. For us it was time to go back down. After a long ride, we reached home in the late afternoon.
