From Santa Cruz de la Sierra we continued our journey towards Potosí in order to get to Uyuni where we will have a 3-day stay. The bus ride took in total around 18 HOURS, 18 hours of adventure - people screaming, snoring and a little bit of sleep. Arriving in Potosí we were shocked. First of all, we were in a place that‘s altitude is more than 4000 meters above sea level. Secondly, because we immediately felt cold in our summer outfit (shorts and a t-shirt), what forced us to change our clothes as quickly as possible. Potosí lies at the foot of the Cerro de Potosi at an altitude of 4090 meters. The summit is 4,824 meters above sea level and is also known as the "rich mountain" due to the large amounts of silver deposit in the area. The city is most famous for this mineral as it was the main source of silver for the Spanish Empire until the 18th century. Potosí was quite a nice town with lots of stone churches and old fashioned cars converted into taxis like we had never seen before. Even though we seemed to be the only gringos in town the locals were extremely receptive and tried to help us whenever they could. Only 5 more hours to finally reach the so-called Uyuni.
