Uyuni

Date: 9.01.2022
Population: 30.000
Elevation: 3700 m
Founded: 1890

Finally, after the long bus journey, we reached Uyuni, where we will start a 3-day guided tour of the southern part of Bolivia. The city itself looked like a typical small and very charming mountain village and its completely dependent on tourism. Interestingly, we saw only 4x4 off-road vehicles on the streets, mainly Toyota Land Cruiser. There’s nothing strange about this, because the city primarily serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the world's largest salt flats, the nearby Uyuni salt flat, as well as an antique train cemetery that arose as a result of collapse of the mining industry that was based on the railway. The main attraction of the day was without the doubt the Salar de Uyuni that made us feel very impressed. The whole area has over 10000 square kilometres and it’s located at an elevation of 3656 m above sea level. All we saw on the horizon was just a watery surface and mountains as well as volcanoes in the distance. At one point there was a place where all visitors usually can put the flags of their countries. A surprising moment that we could even find a Polish flag, so the short photo session was inevitable. In the afternoon we watched the sunset while drinking Bolivian wine and afterwards moved to the hotel which was almost entirely covered with salt.
