After 10 days in Bolivia, it was time for next country, it was time for Peru. We had an early morning flight, so we decided not to book the hostel and wait at the airport. The flight was at 5am, so we spent almost 5 hours at the airport trying to sleep. Finally, after struggling with the check-in and meeting all the requirements set by the Peruvian government, we were able to board and fly to our first destination in Peru - Cusco. The city was mainly famous from being the capital of the Inca Empire and nowadays it relies on tourism. On the first day, right after lunch, we took a collective bus to the small town of Urubamba and then private taxi and went to the Maras Salt Mines-“Salineras de Maras”. In short, these are thousands of shallow saltwater pools that have been strategically dug into the mountainside. The whole process is that these pools evaporate and leave behind crystallized salt. Interestingly, these salt pans have been in operation for more than 500 years and are still mined by local families. One family is responsible for around 10 pools, therefore the entire property has many owners. The next day we focused on discovering Cusco. In the morning we visited the local market, the so-called Mercado Central de San Pedro, where we found plenty of places to eat a decent dinner for less than 10 soles. The food was delicious and, importantly, reasonably priced. Later, we moved to the next part of the market where we ran into a bit strange views. Namely, the heads and even the hearts of animals such as llamas and cows were sold there. It was a terrifying sight so we quickly took a few photos and left the market. Afterwards, we climbed the local summit to reach the Cristo Blanco, the 26-foot Christ statue that immediately reminded us of the original Rio statue that we had the pleasure of seeing almost every day. Then we did a small tour and went on horseback to the local Temple of the Moon and the nearby Inca ruins and caves. We ended the day on the main square of the city watching the sunset.
